Weapon upgrading (also known as weapon grinding) is a service available at the weapon shop which allows you to pay Meseta to enhance the power of your weapons. Each weapon can be upgraded a maximum of ten times through this normal method, but by using an item called an Extend Code, you can perform one final upgrade to greatly enhance your weapon's strength and abilities.

Upgrade process

  • By going to the Weapon Shop inside the Battle Shop area of Clad 6, go to the Upgrade Weapons option to begin.
  • You will have to pay a fee for each grind, increasing in interval by each grind.
  • At full grind, you can use an Extend Code to:
    • Rank C-B-A Weapons:
      • Upgraded to S Rank, stats are upgraded.
      • Level required will also be increased.
      • Special effects can be added or changed.
    • Rank S Weapons:
      • Rank remains S rank, but stats are upgraded.
      • Many options for special attacks are available.
      • More powerful special attacks are available to be attached.
  • Extended Weapons will have a special effect when equipped on the field, noticeably different than the usual equip animation.

Challenge missions and Extend Codes

  • There are a few ways earn Extend Codes:
    • Completing Challenge Missions completely will earn you one Extend Code
      • Completing the Challenge Missions a second time completely will earn you another Extend Code
      • Switching to a different type other than the one you used to earn the first two Extend Codes, will earn you three more Extend Codes respectively.
      • Recreating a new character resets available Extend Codes on that Character Slot.
    • Events will be released that will offer more Extend Codes, but are account-based.
    • DLC (Downloadable Content) will also be released in the form of Challenge Missions Set 2 (Challenge 2), which can earn you more Extend Codes

Regional differences

The weapon upgrade systems are slightly different between the the Japanese and English versions of Phantasy Star Portable 2. Though the functions remain identical, the incremental upgrade values differ. In the Japanese version, the power boost received from each upgrade can vary based on the weapon's grade. For example, C, B and A-grade sabers will always receive +5 ATK with each upgrade, however S-grade sabers can receive either +5 or +6 ATK. This variance was removed in the English version of Phantasy Star Portable 2. And not only that, but the overall upgrade value for each weapon category was also boosted. Going with the previous example, all sabers in the English version of the game, regardless of grade, will receive +7 ATK with each upgrade.
